She’s gone and done it again! After the This Man and One Night trilogies, this was Jodi’s first standalone novel and it doesn’t disappoint.
Jake Sharp, ex SAS sniper turned bodyguard whose life is shrouded in darkness, is employed to protect Camille, London socialite and Daddy’s girl when she is threatened by an unknown source.
The story moves along nicely building the foundations for the characters and allowing you to really get to grips with them before it picks up the pace halfway through with a multitude of mystery, intrigue, suspense and action. Its all there and you’re kept on your toes trying to unravel the story yourself.
Jake is in SO much darkness that I could almost feel his pain, his panic, and his despair physically. Camille surprises you with her strength, character and poise and was a perfect leading lady to match him. Their relationship is a slow burner but it needed that. You can feel the lust and passion building with every page and then BAM, they come together and it doesn’t disappoint….Hot, intense, sexy as hell, everything you’ve come to expect from Jodi’s work.
“Does it swallow you up like it does me? Does it consume you so much you think you might never break free? Tell me you feel the same. Tell me I’m not alone.”
I couldn’t put this book down, reading with every spare ten minutes during the Summer Holidays that I had! You know a book has caught you in its grasp when you start to read faster and faster just to try and see what is going to happen next. You mentally will yourself to slow down as you want it to last but you physically can’t. With equal measure the opposite happened towards the end of The Protector, turning the pages with tears in my eyes and mourning the fact that it was almost over, trying to slow down and needing more! More of this gorgeous, moody hunk of a man with a heart that’s soft and tender.
Jodi writes with such detail, every move, every eye flicker, every nod of the head and swish of a shopping bag, it’s all there in black and white so that as you read you can picture it as if it’s happening right in front of you, as if you’re watching it on the TV. From beginning to end you’re right there with them. The love story of Jake and Cami is one to rival Jesse and Ava and Miller and Livy’s….its just as deep and just as passionate but equally unique to them and the dual POV was excellent, I loved every minute of being inside Jake’s head.
“I’ve never felt so absorbed by a woman that she makes me want to sacrifice my soul in her honour”.
Let’s face it, as much as we love a good love story it’s all about the alpha man for me and Jake is up there and holds his own against Jodi’s other creations….I would happily have him be my Protector!
The Protector is a fantastic stand alone novel that Jodi fans will love, and those that have never read a JEM book before will be snapping up those trilogies of that I’m sure!
